Malta International Fireworks Festival 2020

2020 has been a difficult year across the world due to Coronavirus. This had an impact on every country and many went into lockdown or had travel embargos. Malta was no exception so the event was postponed from April and was successfully held in July and August instead. The festival was held over four nights; 24th July, 27th July, 29th July with the closing ceremony on 7th August.

2020 had 7 competitors from across the world (in firing order):

• CSP Pyrotechnique, France
• Polleggi Pyrotechnics, Italy
• St Andrews Band Club, Luqa, Malta
• Phoenix Fireworks, UK
• Dance of Fire, Ukraine
• Piromaggia, Italy

On the final night, 7th August, a closing ceremony show was executed by Pyro Emotions.

Things started months before the competition with the choosing of the music for the pyromusical display. This involved the whole office choosing a theme, putting suggestions into the hat and working out the best song choices to give a good dynamic range for the display. Once the music was settled it had to be mixed before any choreography could happen. The display was designed and the order for fireworks placed and then it was a waiting game to see if the compeition was going to go ahead.

Once things opened up more and we knew that the competition was going ahead we got our team of 15 out to Malta ready to start rigging the show on 26th ready for firing on 27th. We had to follow Malta’s safeguarding rules and procedures to help reduce the spread of the virus. It was two long days in the hot sun setting up for the show. Luckily we had tents set up so we could get out of the sun to rig the single shots and plenty of water was on hand.
